The rising cost of living (42%) and economic challenges (41%) were the most pressing concerns that motivated European citizens to vote in the June 2024 European elections. Additionally, a third of voters (34%) cited international issues, while defending democracy and the rule of law resonated with 32% of participants. European Parliament President Roberta Metsola emphasized the importance of this voter engagement:
“Last June, people across Europe made their voice count as we saw the highest turnout in the European Parliament elections in 30 years. They gave us a mandate to act, to provide answers and solutions, and to make a positive difference in their daily lives. We will deliver. Over the coming weeks, the European Parliament is scrutinising the new European Commission to ensure it will address the issues that are a priority for people: the cost of living, the state of our economy, democracy, rule of law, migration, and security. The European Parliament will continue to work to make people’s voice count in the EU.”
Despite economic pressures, EU support remains strong. Survey results show that 65% of citizens are optimistic about the EU’s future, and 48% hold a positive impression of the Union. Additionally, 70% of Europeans believe their country benefits from EU membership, citing advantages like enhanced cooperation between member states (36%), peace and security (32%), economic growth (28%), and job creation (24%).

Moreover, 56% of citizens feel their voice matters in the EU, an 8-point rise since early 2024.
Voting habits are becoming entrenched, with 46% of voters saying they always participate, 42% viewing it as a civic duty, and 20% seeking to support their preferred political party.
